The Silesian Insurgents Monument in Katowice

Unveiled in 1967, the monument was designed by Gustaw Zemła and Wojciech Zabłocki. Its three wings represent the three uprisings.

The Silesian Insurgents Monument in Katowice was designed by sculptor Gustaw Zemła and architect Wojciech Zabłocki. Their concept won the competition decided on 1 October 1965. The monument was unveiled on 1 September 1967. Its three wings symbolise the three uprisings.

A gift from Warsaw

The monument was a gift from the people of Warsaw to the inhabitants of Katowice Voivodeship, linked to the region’s contribution to rebuilding the capital. During development, bronze castings replaced the proposed granite. Construction and unveiling ceremonies also belong to the memory politics of communist Poland.
