Alfons Zgrzebniok was born on 16 August 1891 in Dziergowice. He gained military experience in the German army during the First World War and became involved in Polish military organisation in Silesia after returning. He died on 31 January 1937 in Marcinkowice.

Alfons Zgrzebniok assumed insurgent command. The insurgents were less well armed and organised than the German forces, including border-security formations. Local successes did not offset their opponent’s superiority. Major areas of fighting included the Katowice, Pszczyna and Rybnik districts.

The August 1920 uprising had stronger organisational support than the 1919 action. Alfons Zgrzebniok again directed operations. Insurgents took industrial areas and surrounded larger towns containing Allied garrisons or strong police units.
